Agape - Dominican Republic

Mission

To build and maintain a relationship with the community of Batey Lecheria in partnership with the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus. To work with the people of the Batey and the Sisters to improve the quality of life for the people.

Batey Lecheria is a community of Haitian descendants of sugar cane field workers in the DR. Because most of the people do not have documents in either Haiti or the DR, they are unable to find employment, adequate health care, housing, education etc. The Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus founded a mission in the Batey to provide educational opportunities and a small clinic. Our parish has built a Community Center in Lecheria (Centro San Lucas!) and financially provides support to a nutrition program fighting malnutrition in the children. We continue to support a project that encourages the making and selling of jewelry and rosaries by the women and teens of the community there.

Volunteer Opportunities

We participate in regular fundraising activities that help to support periodic trips of a small group of parishioners who participate in projects as requested by the SHCJ sisters to support their ministry. Direct donations supporting the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus in the Dominican Republic can be made to: Society of the Holy Child Jesus | American Province, 1341 Montgomery Avenue, Rosemont, PA, 19010. Jewelry, rosaries and Sock dolls are sold at the annual St. Luke Festival and at other events as requested.

Time Commitment

Varies - from assisting with fundraising to traveling to the Dominican Republic.
