Refugee Mentoring ministry
(Giving Tree)
This
ministry works hand-in-hand with the Refugee Resettlement Office of
the Catholic Social Services here in the Charlotte Diocese. That
office provides this ministry with a list of approximately 30
refugee families from many different ethnic backgrounds who the
diocese has helped to relocate to our area. At Christmas time many
of these families do not have the means to enjoy the pleasure
of exchanging gifts. Our Giving Tree at St. Luke's is a way for our
parish to donate a little of our time, a little of our resources,
and a lot of our love to help this happen. Before Christmas,
volunteers will be needed to help make the gift tags for our
Giving Tree. The parish will be asked to purchase the gifts that
they have picked from the tags on the Giving tree and then
additional volunteers will gather the week before Christmas
and deliver the gifts to the refugee families. The time needed by
members of our parish to support this ministry is minimal but the
rewards are great! Gifts are truly "exchanged" on that delivery
day. Our volunteer families deliver the gifts that our parish has
purchased for them, and the refugee families return with their gifts
of love, thanks, hospitality and friendship
